Laser Marking

Laser marking is a process that selectively alters the surface properties of a material using a laser, such as changing its colour or surface finish.

Common Applications

• Part Identification: Marking part IDs, such as serial numbers.
• Corporate Branding: Engraving logos and branding directly onto the surface of parts.

Since these markings are etched directly into the material, they are significantly more durable and longer-lasting than printed labels or stickers.

Laser Etching

Laser etching is a related process that, while physically identical to laser marking, continues beyond surface treatment to erode the material layer by layer. This method allows a design to be cut into the volume of the part itself, resulting in even greater durability than laser marking.

By varying the parameters at different points in the design, the depth of the etch can be adjusted, creating a three-dimensional shape. This process can be thought of as inverse 3D printing.
