Laser Cutting

Using various laser machines, we efficiently process both thick and thin sheets to fulfil our customers' requirements.

Our flatbed laser cutting machines handle sheets up to 3000x1500mm, cutting stainless steel, mild steel, and aluminium up to 25mm thick. Our fibre laser cuts brass up to 6mm and copper up to 4mm. Precision machines can cut sheets as thin as 0.025mm. Accurate pricing is provided through our online quoting system using DXF or DWG files.

Did you know that "laser" is an acronym for Light Amplification by Stimulated Emission of Radiation? The first laser was constructed by Theodore Maiman at Hughes Research Laboratories in Malibu, California, in 1960. In 1965, the Western Electric Engineering Research Center developed the first production laser cutting machine, which was used to drill holes in diamond dies. By the 1970s, the aerospace industry began utilising laser cutting for titanium in various applications.

Although laser technology is often still considered "new," it has significantly advanced. Ongoing research continues to produce new machines capable of cutting thicker materials faster and more efficiently.

At Microkerf we have a wide range of laser technologies at our disposal. Our laser cutting machines utilise CO2 technology as well as disc, fibre and Nd:YAG. They all have different capabilities and we chose which one to use based on the requirements of our customers. Whilst we mainly cut metals, we can also utilise our solid-state lasers to process silicon wafers, ceramics and industrial diamonds. These machines are also great at cutting very thin material, pre-machined parts or small diameter tubes. Our knowledgeable experts will take time to understand your requirements and will try to find the best suited process.

We maintain an extensive inventory of materials and thicknesses. For stainless steel, we stock grades 304 and 316 up to 25mm in thickness. These are available in various finishes, including mirror polished, dull polished (brushed), mill finish with protective coating, and specialised surface finishes such as 2WL, 5WL, and tread plate.

In mild steel, we carry cold reduced (CR4/DC01) and hot rolled structural steels like S275 and S355. The thickness of CR4 ranges from 0.5mm to 3mm, while hot rolled materials range from 1.5mm to 25mm. Floor plate is also available.

Additionally, we offer spring stainless and mild steel in both annealed and hardened conditions. We also stock various grades of aluminium, brass, and copper. Please feel free to contact us with your specific requirements, and we will be happy to check our stock availability. Alternatively, we can work with materials supplied by our customers.
